Background of the study
This study explores the impact of translation practices on the preservation of Yoruba oral literature in Ibadan. Yoruba oral literature, a vibrant repository of cultural wisdom, proverbs, folktales, and historical narratives, faces the dual challenge of modernization and linguistic dilution (Akinola, 2023). Translation has emerged as a critical tool for making this oral literature accessible to broader audiences, both within and beyond Yoruba-speaking communities. However, the translation process itself raises concerns regarding the loss of nuanced meanings, cultural context, and traditional aesthetics. In Ibadan, where efforts to preserve Yoruba heritage are intensified by academic and cultural institutions, translation practices are being refined to balance fidelity to the source material with accessibility to modern readers. This study utilizes a qualitative approach, involving textual analysis of translated works, interviews with translators and cultural experts, and field observations of oral recitations. It examines how translation practices can either support or hinder the preservation of cultural identity and linguistic integrity, providing a comprehensive assessment of current strategies and offering recommendations for enhancing translation methodologies (Akinola, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Despite the potential of translation practices to preserve Yoruba oral literature, challenges persist in maintaining the authenticity and cultural nuances of the original texts. In Ibadan, variations in translation quality, misinterpretations, and the tendency to over-simplify rich oral narratives have led to concerns about cultural erosion (Akinola, 2023). These issues not only compromise the integrity of Yoruba oral literature but also hinder its effective transmission to younger generations. The study aims to identify these challenges and assess the impact of current translation practices on the preservation of Yoruba cultural heritage, while proposing strategies to improve translation accuracy and cultural fidelity.
Objectives of the study:
To evaluate current translation practices of Yoruba oral literature in Ibadan.
To identify challenges that affect the preservation of cultural nuances.
To recommend strategies for improving translation methodologies.
Research questions:
How do current translation practices affect the preservation of Yoruba oral literature?
What challenges are encountered in maintaining cultural and linguistic fidelity during translation?
What measures can improve the effectiveness of translation practices?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it assesses the impact of translation practices on preserving Yoruba oral literature in Ibadan. The insights gained will be invaluable for translators, cultural custodians, and policymakers seeking to safeguard Yoruba heritage while adapting traditional narratives for modern audiences. By addressing the challenges inherent in the translation process, the research contributes to more effective preservation of indigenous literature and cultural identity (Akinola, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to examining the impact of translation practices on the preservation of Yoruba oral literature in Ibadan, focusing on translated texts and cultural expert interviews.
Definitions of terms:
Translation practices: Methods used to convert oral literature from one language to another.
Oral literature: Traditional spoken narratives and cultural expressions.
Cultural fidelity: The accuracy and authenticity in preserving cultural nuances during translation.
